White shorts in pure linen, 205 grams to the metre, so they are light and let the air through on a hot day. Linen creases as it is worn and softens over time, which is part of its appeal. A clean white that sits well with navy, pale blue and green, and with brown leather.
The detail is in the waistband: a pointed tab on each side, each with two buttons set 3 cm apart and no hook, and a single belt loop at the right front with none anywhere else. One pleat on each side folds toward the side seam, 2.5 cm deep. Front pockets slant at 3.2 cm, the back pockets are welted with a button, the fly is straight, and the front is fully lined, a sensible thing in white linen. Wear them with a navy jacket or a plain linen shirt. Cut to your measurements.

Steam rather than wash, and press under a cloth. Rest it a day between wears on a shaped hanger. Dry-clean sparingly; once or twice a season is plenty.
