Alumo

Two-fold cotton shirting from a Swiss house of 1918

Alumo dates from 1918, when Carl Albrecht founded the Albrecht weaving mill at Grüningen, in Switzerland, with 48 looms. Robert Morgen joined the business in 1941 and it became Albrecht + Morgen, a name later shortened to Alumo. The house works today from Herisau, in the hills of Appenzell, which have long been home to the Swiss textile trade.

In the 1950s it narrowed its focus to fine cotton shirting, and the cloth went out into the world under the line "Alumo, the fine Swiss fabric". Shirting has been its whole work ever since. The cloth is built on fine two-fold yarns, two threads twisted together before weaving, which gives a light fabric real strength.

That construction is what you feel. Alumo shirting has a dry, clean touch and a smooth, even face that survives years of laundering. Collars keep their line, and the cloth presses crisply and stays that way past lunchtime.
