These are dyed after they are sewn, trousers first and colour second, which leaves the grey sitting a shade deeper in the seams and gives the whole garment a softly worn-in cast from the first wear. The cloth is a broken twill: the diagonal reverses at intervals, adding a faint zigzag texture and helping the legs hang true. Stretch through the weave; cut to your measurements.

Steam rather than wash, and press under a cloth. Rest it a day between wears on a shaped hanger. Dry-clean sparingly; once or twice a season is plenty.
