We have moved. After four years in our Surry Hills terrace, THEODORE now lives at 88 Pitt Street, Redfern: a sandstone terrace with iron lace along the verandah and the 88 beside the door. It is a few minutes from where we started and a short walk from Redfern station. Come and see it.
More room to do things properly
The old studio was never short on charm, but it was short on space. Fittings, cloth books, the lounge and the team all shared one floor, and on a busy Saturday it showed. The new place is a good deal larger, and for the first time the fitout was built around how we actually work rather than what an old house happened to give us.
Two buildings, one address
The terrace at the front is the studio. That is where you will be measured, where you will sit with a stylist and turn the pages of the cloth books, and where your suit comes back for its fitting. Across the courtyard garden is a second building that holds the back office: design, orders, client care and everything that has to happen between your first appointment and the day your garments arrive. Keeping the two apart means the studio stays quiet and unhurried, and the people looking after your order are still thirty steps away when a question comes up.
The studio
Original sandstone walls, two fireplaces, chesterfields you will not want to get out of. The cloth library sits within arm's reach of the sofas, so choosing a fabric happens with the book in your lap and the light from the sash windows on the swatch, not across a counter. The mantels carry cufflinks and a changing handful of house pieces stand nearby; the glass-top tables hold ties and pocket squares to try against whatever you are looking at. There is usually a bottle of something open.
Getting here
88 Pitt Street, Redfern NSW 2016. Street parking is easy on Pitt Street and the streets around it, which is a rare thing this close to the city, and Redfern station is a short walk. Studio visits are by appointment, so you have the place to yourself. Appointments are complimentary, and if you are not in Sydney the virtual fitting is still a couple of clicks away.
