Grey wool trousers at 320 grams to the metre, the weight of a good winter suiting, in wool with a little spandex for recovery at the knee. Mid grey is the most useful trouser colour there is: it goes under navy, brown, green and black, with a brogue or a trainer.
A single pleat folds toward the side seam, 1.5 cm deep, so the front sits flat when standing and opens a little when seated. Straight fly, a button waistband with no extension, and belt loops. Front pockets slant at 3.2 cm, back pockets are besom with a button, and the hem is fixed with a 2 cm topstitch. Cut to your measurements.

Steam rather than wash, and press under a cloth. Rest it a day between wears on a shaped hanger. Dry-clean sparingly; once or twice a season is plenty.
