Wine red: a deep burgundy with more blue in it than brick. Cut in the family's stretch cotton twill and hemmed to your measurement. Dark reds behave like neutrals from the waist down, so navy, grey, cream and denim all sit comfortably above them. The give in the weave carries a long day easily.

Steam rather than wash, and press under a cloth. Rest it a day between wears on a shaped hanger. Dry-clean sparingly; once or twice a season is plenty.
