Dormeuil began in 1842, when Jules Dormeuil, then 22 years old, started importing the finest English cloth to France. His brothers August and Alfred soon joined him, and the house opened premises in Paris and London, one foot in French taste, the other in English weaving. That family heritage has now run for more than 180 years.

The reputation was built on two habits: selecting the most beautiful raw materials available, and finishing them with techniques ahead of the trade. Finishing matters more than most people think. It is where a good worsted becomes a great one.

For the cutter, Dormeuil means a crisp, dry hand. The worsteds and mohair blends take a sharp crease and hold it, and the surface resists the shine that cheaper cloth develops at the elbows. Press it once in the morning and the line is still there at night.

Our Beige Pinstripe Suit and Cream Couture Suit are both cut from Dormeuil cloth. Pale tailoring is an unforgiving brief: every flaw in a weave shows, and a limp finish has nowhere to hide. These lengths carry it off without fuss, which is exactly the quiet, expensive work this house has always charged for.
