Black trousers in pure wool of a fine grade, so the cloth is smooth to the hand. The black is a true black rather than a dark navy, and it sits with almost anything: grey knitwear, a white shirt, a black or brown shoe.
One box pleat each side, and a cut-on waistband: the front runs straight up into the waist with no separate band, and there are no belt loops. Instead, each pleat carries a 4 cm vertical opening, worked like a buttonhole just below the waist edge, so a belt can pass through the pleat itself. The waist closes on a single button with no extension. Front pockets are left without topstitching, the back pockets are double-besom, and the leg finishes in 5.1 cm turn-ups. Unlined. Wear them with a fine knit or an open-collar shirt. Cut to your measurements.

Steam rather than wash, and press under a cloth. Rest it a day between wears on a shaped hanger. Dry-clean sparingly; once or twice a season is plenty.
